Zero-Click Search Statistics: Where the Traffic Went

Zero click searches made up about 68% of US Google searches in early 2026, up from 60% in 2024. In a 2025 Semrush study, 92 to 94% of AI Mode sessions ended without a click too. Exposure is uneven, near 90% AI coverage in health and B2B software but only about 4% in e-commerce and 7% local, which makes local and decision-stage intent the surfaces where clicks still convert.

Key Takeaways
  • 68% of US Google searches ended without a click in early 2026, up from 60% in 2024. In AI Mode it was 92 to 94% in a 2025 Semrush study.
  • Exposure depends on your query mix: near 90% AI coverage in health and B2B software, 4% e-commerce, 7% local.
  • Impressions up with clicks down and stable rankings usually signals AI answers absorbing queries.
  • Defend the surfaces that still click while competing for citations inside the answers.

Why this matters

A frequent question from site owners is why impressions are climbing while clicks fall and rankings hold steady. In most cases nothing has broken; the results page now answers more queries directly. Understanding the zero-click numbers, and how unevenly they apply, turns a worrying chart into a plan for where to compete.

Why it is happening

Two mechanisms drive the shift. The first is answer surfaces: AI Overviews, AI Mode, featured snippets, knowledge panels, and the local map pack all resolve a query on the results page, so the searcher never needs to click through. The second is Google keeping more interactions inside the results, which serves more queries per session. For a business, the effect appears as a widening gap between impressions, which count when your page is eligible to appear, and clicks, which only count when someone leaves for your site. When rankings hold but click-through rate falls, an answer surface has usually taken the interaction your snippet used to earn.

The numbers

MetricFigure
Google searches ending without a click68.01% of US searches, Jan to Apr 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024 (SparkToro, using Similarweb data)
Zero-click rate inside AI Mode92 to 94% of sessions (Semrush, US desktop, May to July 2025)
AI Overview coverage, health and B2B softwareApproaching 90%
E-commerce queries showing AI OverviewsAbout 4% (down from 29%)
Local searches showing AI OverviewsAbout 7%
AI Overview citations from top-10 resultsFell from 76% to 38%, July 2025 to March 2026 (Ahrefs)

These figures come from different studies with different methods, so compare them with care. The next section explains why they differ. The direction is consistent, though. Google also reported at I/O 2026 that AI Mode had passed a billion monthly users with query volume more than doubling each quarter.

Why the numbers differ

Zero-click figures vary a lot between studies. In a study earlier in 2025, Semrush reported about 34% zero-click for searches without an AI Overview and about 43% with one. SparkToro reported 68% for US Google searches in early 2026. Semrush notes that its figures come from separate studies with different methods and time frames. Three differences explain most of the gap.

  • Different data panels. SparkToro says its own history compares clickstream panels from different providers: Jumpshot for 2016 and 2019, Datos for 2024 and Similarweb for 2026. It calls the comparison “a bit of apples and oranges”.
  • Different definitions of a click. In SparkToro’s study, a click of any kind counts, including clicks to organic results, to ads and to Google’s own products such as Maps and YouTube. Only another search in the default search box doesn’t count. A study that counts clicks differently reports a different rate.
  • Different scope. The 68.01% figure covers US searches in a web browser from January to April 2026. It leaves out the Google mobile app, where SparkToro says the true rate is likely higher. Semrush’s 92 to 94% figure covers almost 69 million US desktop sessions between May and July 2025, so the two can’t be compared directly.

When you quote a zero-click figure, name the study, the period and the country. Without those three, the number can’t be checked.

Reading your exposure

Exposure is a property of your query mix rather than a single site-wide number. The practical first step is to classify your commercially relevant queries into three buckets: AI-answered informational, click-preserving transactional and local, and branded. Check live results rather than assuming, since coverage shifts by month and vertical. The share of value sitting in the first bucket is your exposure, and it tells you how much of the response should go to earning citations versus defending clicks.

What still converts

Local and decision-stage intent are the safe harbours, and both reward classic craft. A plumbing firm's engineered service-area pages earned organic calls from towns it had never advertised in, and a SaaS company's comparison cluster drove 31% of sales-qualified pipeline at a 7.4% page conversion rate, in the service-area SEO and comparison pages case studies. Because surviving clicks are scarcer and higher-intent, each is worth more, which makes pairing this with conversion optimisation sensible. Local service businesses are the clearest winners, since their intent surface is barely touched by AI answers, as a dental group found in our local SEO case study. Frequently Asked Questions

It is the leading suspect but not the only one. Rule out a rankings shift toward high-impression low-intent queries, new SERP features, seasonality, and tracking changes first, then check your top queries live for an AI answer occupying the space your snippet used to.

Transactional and local intent mostly. AI Overviews appear on about 4% of e-commerce queries and 7% of local searches, and comparison and decision-stage queries retain clicks because buyers verify before spending.

Publish differently. Generic informational posts now compete with an AI answer built partly from posts like them, so their return has fallen. Decision-stage, local, and citation-worthy assets retain or gain value.

A query that ends on the results page without a visit to any website, because the answer appeared in an AI Overview, featured snippet, knowledge panel, map pack, or AI Mode response. Zero-click behaviour has grown from roughly half of searches in 2019 to about two-thirds in 2026.

SparkToro found that 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click between January and April 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024. That count treats clicks to organic results, ads and Google’s own products as clicks. Other studies use different data and definitions, so their figures differ.

SparkToro found that 0.34% of US searches reached AI Mode between January and April 2026. It also reports that Google said at I/O 2026 that AI Mode had passed 1 billion monthly users, with query volume more than doubling each quarter.
